Iced & Easy
Making iced coffee is simple, but not as simple as pouring hot brewed coffee over ice. The ice will melt and dilute your finished beverage. The best way to prepare iced coffee is to make a batch specifically for cold consumption. Start by brewing a cup or pot of hot coffee. Seek out a bold or dark roast and add more grounds than you normally would to create a strong robust flavor (sometimes referred to as double-brewed coffee.) The higher the ratio of coffee to water, the stronger the coffee will be. For every 6 ounces of water, 2 to 4 tablespoons of coffee grinds can be used, depending on personal preference. Once the coffee has finished brewing, allow to cool to room temperature and then store in the refrigerator until well chilled. Pour chilled coffee into glass filled with ice and add cream or sweeteners as desired. Another method is the cold-brew method which consists of immersing coffee grinds in cool water until the coffee has fully extracted. This can be a slow process but prevents some of the bitter tasting characteristics that hot brewing methods can introduce. There are several products such as cold-brew pitchers available to aid in this process.
